All new construction is subject to an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and subsequent local regulatory approvals. Energy efficiency, water intensity and emissions are key considerations, as well as impact on local communities through effective waste management.

Quality, Food & Safety Expand

As Olam continues to expand its presence in midstream processing, food safety has become the key quality parameter for many of our business units. This is especially so for the packaged foods business, cocoa, coffee and dairy, edible nuts, and spices and vegetables, where we process, package and sell an increasing portfolio of Ready-to Eat consumer and foodservice products.

We now have an Olam Quality Policy and Food Safety System, which includes guidelines on Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), both of which are essential prerequisites of internationally recognised Food Safety systems. We have chosen BRC certification as the global standard that both ourselves and our customers require

Health & Safety Expand

Health & Safety is a key part of Olam’s QEHS improvement programme. We are ensuring the necessary focus on Safe Systems of Work, Risk Management, Incident Investigation, correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Permits to work, and LockOut-TagOut (LOTO). These are the fundamentals which are becoming mandatory within our operations.

We are also implementing standardised operations performance metrics, amongst which are the safety metrics of Lost Time Incident Frequency Rate (LTIFR) and Number of Days since last LTI. Once established we will understand where we need to make improvements and set targets and action plans accordingly.

Environment Expand

We consider carbon, water and waste/packaging to be the key parameters that need to be measured and reduced in our processing plants. The starting point in our approach to environmental responsibility is the Olam Environment Maturity Gap Tool. This enables assessment against the key factors of management systems, leadership, compliance, continuous improvement, equipment and process design, people capability, and external stakeholders. The outcome of each gap analysis is used to develop a prioritised improvement programme for that facility.


Our initial focus in processing has been on carbon fuel energy reduction. One of the ways in which we do this is by using the agricultural waste material as fuel. Some current practices across the group include:

  • Our Vietnam coffee plant uses spent coffee grounds to reduce coal consumption. Future plans aim to reach carbon neutrality by utilising rice husk firing.
  • In India we use a fluidised bed combustion boiler in our new rice processing plant in order to burn rice husk. This resulted in a saving of over 1,000 tonnes of fuel oileach year.
  • Our African mechanised cashew processing plants use steam boilers to burn roasted cashew nut shells using about 50 tonnes of shell consumption per day at full capacity. The shells are also de-oiled prior to use as a fuel, thereby reducing the CO2 and NOx emissions.
  • The Spices and Vegetable Ingredients (SVI) plants in California completed an extensive audit of facilities resulting in measures that equated to 2,300 tonnes of CO2 reduction.


Olam’s new Environment Standard on Water Management, requires an effective programme to enable all operations to systematically identify all sources of water use, to implement conservation programmes to reduce water intensity, to monitor and record all water use and to develop targets and a site water use master plan.

The standard applies to all workplaces where Olam manufactures and distributes midstream and downstream products, its majority owned subsidiaries and those facilities where Olam maintains management control.

  • The Gilroy, Firebaugh, Lemoore and Williams sites have set up recirculation loops, replacement of high flow hoses and installed float switches
  • The Lemoore plant has projects that will save 204 million litres per season, reducing water use by 18%
  • Specific actions taken by the Lemoore team include conversion of the seal and cooling water from a single pass operation to a closed loop recirculation system

Waste and Packaging

We are not significant producers of waste or users of packaging. However, we continually strive to find ways to reduce our impact.

  • In our cotton business in the USA, we recycle plastic and hydraulic oil. We capture the used oil which is removed by an approved oil recycler, saving 41,000 litres of waste oil per year
  • The OSVI Gilroy site has diverted over 318,000 kgs from landfill which is the equivalent reduction of 213 tonnes of CO2
  • Britannia Food Ingredients in the UK, compress cardboard and plastic packaging into bales for recycling. This activity has diverted approximately US$110,000 of value from landfill sites
