Safety and security of our product and its supply has been paramount to our success.
Rice origination at Olam began in Thailand in 2006, and has since moved to all major rice-exporting countries outside the United States. Our origin teams are spread across major growing regions and focus on buying the best rice. Our processing expertise helps us to closely monitor and ensure that the rice maintains its quality throughout the entire operational process. With comprehensive origination offices, both in quantity and capability, we are able to work with secure counter parties, and offer flexible contracting and strong logistics in developing markets.
To improve quality, we have also made selective rice processing investments in origins where we see a potential for greater value to be extracted directly from the value chain:
- Outgrowers’ Project, Thailand: Olam has partnered with GIZ and the Thai Rice Department to reach farmers upstream, ensuring quality and traceability of rice back to the source.
- Certified Processing Unit, Thailand: To maintain quality during processing, Olam operates an aggregation, sorting and packing facility of more than 100,000 tonnes in annual capacity, certified and approved by GMP-HACCP, GMP-FDA and Thailand Trust Mark (TTM).
- Rice Mill, Vietnam: Our joint venture in Vietnam gives us a firm understanding of what it means to mill quality rice for global consumers. Our rice mill has an annual capacity of 150,000 tonnes, and is certified by BRC Category A, and ISO 22000.
- Quality Laboratory: We have established a working laboratory to ensure specification and certification, with flexibility for customers. We are able to offer targeted solutions to match precise demand requirements.
