Olam commenced operations in Côte d’Ivoire (popularly known as the Ivory Coast) in 1994, exporting raw cashew nuts to India. Over the years, we have built a strong presence across the country. We manage the complete supply chain, starting from warehousing, primary and value added processing, inland logistics and shipping. Our customers receive a complete supply chain solution from the farmgate to their factory.
We directly employ a talented team of 948 people who man our locations across the country. In addition, we offer regular and year round employment to over 5,500 people through sub-contractors. More than 80% of these are women. Today, in addition to being one of the leading exporters of cocoa, coffee, cashew and cotton, we are also a key processor of cashew and cocoa.
We work with more than a 1,000 cooperatives that reach out to an estimated 85,000 farmers through unique partnerships. For each product, we undertake an integrated value chain approach for our customers, ensuring full traceability from origination to delivery. Mantra, our in-house logistics business manages the entire internal process. As part of our community initiatives, we manage several programmes that help to improve the livelihoods of more than 300,000 local farmers, enhancing quality and augmenting their productivity to ensure they earn better value for their produce. The innovative work being undertaken by SECO, our cotton company, has been the subject of a Harvard Business School case study in 2013. Our common purpose of Growing Responsibly was also recognised with the runner up award by Guardian Sustainable Business Award in the Supply chain Category for our pioneering Sustainable Cashew Growers programme.
